Can you use wave files or just mp3?

Sorry, novice here. I make my own audio tracks in Band in a box software. I want to combine with text for home karaoke use. (via usb memory drive) Must I use a compressed (mp3 or mp4) file? Can I use an uncompressed audio file? (wave file?) Does the file size matter, other than storage?
